Position Summary:
Consistent with the mission of Ben’s Ranch Foundation, the Barn & Facilities Manager of Koteewi Stables will oversee the daily operations of the equine public riding facility while supporting youth development programs through safe, well-managed animal care and facility operations.
This position is responsible for managing the horses, livestock, facilities, equipment, volunteers, and part-time staff that support both public trail riding operations and youth programming. The Manager will create a safe, welcoming, and professional environment for visitors, volunteers, youth participants, and community partners.
The Manager will supervise and mentor volunteers and staff, maintain high standards of animal welfare, oversee facility maintenance, and support the Foundation’s mission of helping youth build confidence, responsibility, and life skills through meaningful experiences involving animals and agriculture.
Koteewi Stable and Trails is a public horseback riding facility located within Koteewi Park in Strawtown, Indiana. The Stables served more than 1,000 customers in 2025 and generated over $100,000 in revenue. The facility also serves as a key platform for Ben’s Ranch programs, including youth internships, small-group programs, and hands-on learning experiences.
The Barn & Facilities Manager will serve as a visible representative of the Foundation and will assist with community outreach, tours, donor engagement, volunteer recruitment, and public events.
Key Responsibilities
Facility Operations & Management
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of Koteewi Stables.
- Maintain safe, clean, organized, and efficient barn, pasture, arena, and storage areas.
- Supervise facility maintenance and repairs.
- Manage inventory of feed, bedding, supplies, and equipment.
- Develop and implement operational procedures and safety standards.
- Ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations and organizational policies.
Leadership & Team Development
- Recruit, train, supervise, and support volunteers and part-time staff.
- Create work schedules and provide adequate supervision during weekdays, evenings, weekends, and seasonal operations.
- Foster a positive culture centered on professionalism, teamwork, accountability, and respect.
- Provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and development opportunities for staff and volunteers.
- Lead by example through a strong work ethic, integrity, and commitment to our mission.
Animal Care & Welfare
- Oversee the daily care and management of horses and other livestock.
- Monitor feeding programs, turnout schedules, grooming, health concerns, and the administration of medication, as directed.
- Coordinate veterinary, farrier, dental, and other professional services.
- Maintain detailed animal care records.
- Ensure humane handling practices and adherence to established care protocols.
- Implement emergency procedures and risk management practices.
Youth Program Support
- Support youth programming through supervision, mentoring, and hands-on participation in barn and animal care activities.
- Model responsibility, professionalism, and safe animal handling practices.
- Help create meaningful opportunities for youth to build confidence, work ethic, communication skills, and personal responsibility.
- Assist with internship, volunteer, and experiential learning activities as needed.
Financial & Administrative Responsibilities
- Assist with budgeting and expense management.
- Support revenue-generating activities and customer service operations.
- Contribute to marketing and community outreach efforts.
- Assist with grant reporting, program documentation, and operational reporting as requested.
- Serve as a steward of organizational resources through efficient and responsible management practices.
Qualifications
Required
- Significant experience with horses and/or livestock.
- Experience managing barn operations, animal care programs, or agricultural facilities.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Experience supervising employees, volunteers, and teams.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying and adverse weather conditions and perform physical tasks.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials associated with barn operations.
- Must be available to work on occasions, weekends, and holidays.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Successful completion of a background check.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Experience working with youth programs, mentoring, or volunteer organizations.
- Knowledge of equine facility management and public riding operations.
- Experience in nonprofit organizations.
- Experience or training in mental health, trauma-informed care, or youth development training.
- Experience operating tractors, trailers, utility vehicles, and farm equipment.
- First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to complete.
- Experience with budgeting, scheduling, and operational planning.
Work Environment
- Office, barn, pasture, outdoor, and office environments.
- Frequent interaction with horses, livestock, youth participants, volunteers, and members of the public.
- Moderate to heavy physical activity, including lifting, walking, grooming, feeding, and cleaning.
- Most work is performed on site at Koteewi Stables.
- Some remote administrative work may be permitted when appropriate.
- The facility remains operational during certain holidays and special events.
Compensation
- Hourly pay $22-$28, based on experience.
